In June 1994, the Tyler 2000 PLUS Steering Committee assembled a Task Force
of 134
people with diverse backgrounds from the Tyler metropolitan area to
verbalize their VISION of Tyler at the turn of the millennium.
Everyone in Tyler had access to the VISION process through wide coverage by
the media. The VISION document was circulated to the
public in July for comment in writing and at a public hearing in August.
This is the VISION in the six foundation areas necessary to provide
competitive advantage in a fast changing
and competitive world.

Has
an internationally acclaimed education system that prepares citizens
to live successfully in the 21st century.

Is a dynamic community that enriches the quality of life for all its
citizens.

Anticipates and provides infrastructure that meets the needs of
citizens,
visitors,
business and government.

Serves regionally and competes internationally.

Has service oriented government that responds to
needs of the
community and supports economic growth and opportunity for all.

Has visionary private sector leadership that facilitates the
development of
dynamic,
progressive and attractive Tyler and East Texas Region.

This VISION and Strategies will become reality as they are shared throughout the
community. We urge each organization in Tyler and Smith County to
incorporate this
VISION and Strategies into their annual work programs for the rest of
this century.
