VIRGINIA

In 1999, as a % of the United States per capita income, the Northern Virginia per capita income was 143%, the Richmond MSA-107%, Charlottesville MSA 107%, Virginia State-104% and Virginia without the MSAs above the US was 81%

§         The Northern Virginia, Richmond MSA and Charlottesville MSA were 47% of the Virginia population in 1999.

§         Northern Virginia increased 12% from 1979 –1999, Richmond MSA increased 2%, Charlottesville increased 20%, the state increased 4% and the “rest of Virginia” decreased 1%.

§         Does the higher cost of living in Northern Virginia, Seattle and Chicago reduce or eliminate the advantage of their high per capita income?

§         What effect will the technology decline, recession and war have on high per capita income MSAs?

DALTON, GA-In September 2001 Target Tomorrow celebrated five-years of implementation progress.  Don Cope was presented the “Vision Partner of the Year” Award. Don was President of the Chamber in 1996 when the Target Tomorrow Vision was developed.  In 1997, he moved to Dalton Utilities as CEO.  Since then he has led a revitalization of Dalton Utilities, began addressing the countywide “water and sewer strategy”, and many other strategies.

Don Cope-CEO Dalton Utilities and “Target Tomorrow Vision Partner of the Year.”  Accepting the award, Cope commented, “It’s not about yesterday, it’s not about what we used to be, it’s about what we can be by exercising ourselves for the community that has given so much to us.” 

CABARRUS COUNTY, NC-Envision Cabarrus Steering Committee and Foundation Team Chairs selected the first six Key Strategies on November 30, 2001.  The Foundation Teams will recruit the appropriate Vision Partners for each strategy.  On February 20-22, 2002, Henry Luke will help establish the six Strategic Alliances. http://www.envisioncabarrus.org/

 

HAMPTON ROADS, VA-In mid-October 2001, the Hampton Roads Chamber led their fifth annual city visit to Austin, TX.  Despite the timing related to the September 11th tragedy, 65 people attended and reported an excellent trip.

 

HARRISBURG, PA-The Harrisburg Regional Chamber will lead the fourth annual intercity visit to Hartford, CT in April 2002.  http://www.harrisburgregionalchamber.org/display.aspx?pathId=envision

 

RAPID CITY, ND-Frontiers: Forging our Future-The Black Hills Vision recently reported accomplishments of organizations and individuals in the Black Hills Region.  http://www.hpcnet.org/frontiers

- Homestake/National Science Laboratory Neutrino project successfully secured.
-$225,000 federal continuation grant awarded to the Weed & Seed program.
- An airport land-use project in Lawrence County will include building a new runway and buying add'l land for perimeter protection.
- Heartland Expressway to Hermosa completed; funding secured to Maverick Junction.
- Lifeflight helicopter service instituted from Rapid City Regional Hospital.
- Inter-regional long distance telephone fees eliminated.
- Ellsworth AFB remains operational.
- Catron Boulevard (Rapid City) construction completed.
- Completion of downtown Rapid City parking garage.
- Closed campuses at Rapid City high schools.
- Construction Center (Rapid City) established to combine/streamline development/permitting processes.
- Rapid City YMCA expansion completed.
- 'Character Counts' expanded and Black Hills Alliance For Youth--'America’s Promise' reenergized.
- Junior Leadership (Rapid City) class instituted.
- Spearfish Old Opera House renovated.
- Pine Ridge Chamber of Commerce organized.
- Black Hills Mayors’ group expanded.
- Construction of The Journey Museum.
- Black Hills Economic Development organization expanded.
- Secured Red Dogs football.

RICHMOND, VA-The Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce provided a SITUATION ANALYSIS on October 16, 2001 in response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.  The document included an update of Greater Richmond’s 2010 Project Priorities and Strengths and recommendations to business and local government. http://www.grcc.com/vision2010/

 

CURACAO, NETHERLANDS ANTILLES-Roland Ignacio, President ABVO, Public Service Union, Curacao and Vishon Korsou Steering Committee member, described the Curacao Vision to the Caribbean Labor Administration Conference on September 25, 2001.  Vishon Korsou led a Tourism Mini-conference on November 27, 2001 entitled the “Curacao Experience”.  http://www.vishonkorsou.org/
