Henry Luke- Newsletter  #34-COMMUNITY VISIONING RESULTS -October 2002
 

JACKSONVILLE, FL-This year completes 20 years of Henry Luke facilitating Vision and Strategic Planning for communities.  We are thankful for the 53 communities with which we have had the privilege of working.  As part of our anniversary celebration, we are adding copies of Vision/Strategic Plans that do not have web sites to the Luke Planning web site.  Currently, there are 41 community plans available for your review and we will add 10 more by the year-end. http://www.lukevision.com/communities.htm

A second part of our 20-year celebration was our first annual meeting of Vision Directors held in Atlanta, GA on October 10-12, 2002.  Vision Directors shared their experiences in the Vision Implementation Process from Mobile, AL; Lakeland  & St. Johns County, FL; Conyers-Rockdale, GA; Harrisburg & Schuylkill, PA; Saginaw, MI; Curacao, Netherlands Antilles; Cabarrus, Union, & Rutherford Counties, NC; Rapid City, SD;  & Yakima, WA.    Next year’s meeting will be October 9-11, 2003.

 

HARRISBURG, PA-In September 2002, The Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry recognized the “Harrisburg Region” as it’s 2002 “Outstanding Pennsylvania Community.” http://www.harrisburgregionalchamber.org/display.aspx?pathId=envision

 

RUTHERFORD, NC-.  During the months of September and October over eighty organizations and 2900 individuals throughout the community were presented the Draft Strategic Plan for Realize Rutherford.  A one-page summary was mailed to over 7,000 residents and over 11,000 were distributed to homes through the elementary schools.  The "Daily Courier" also placed the draft as an insert in their August 18th paper circulated to over 16,000 homes.  On October 28, 2002, a Community Meeting was held and 200 residents came and provided their final input and comments for the Draft Strategic Plan. The final plan is currently being edited and approved.  Distribution of the final plan will be in late November.

 

JACKSONVILLE, FL-“Development of Northeast Florida without regard to political subdivision and under a single name” was a strategy in the Jacksonville 2005-A Regional Vision-facilitated in early 1983. http://www.lukevision.com/jacksonville_vision_1983.htm  The November 6, 2002 Times Union describes how the name “Florida’s First Coast” was selected by year-end 1983 and its success over nearly 20 years. “Nearly 800 business places and organizations in Northeast Florida have adopted the name.  But maybe more importantly, the region has adopted the name and made it a permanent Florida fixture."   http://www.jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/110602/bus_10891102.shtml

 

GWINNETT, GA-In 1987-1998, Gwinnett County made a decision where to locate the new Gwinnett Civic and Cultural Center.  Should it be in the traditional county center in Lawrenceville, or in the I-85 Corridor.  A site was select in the I-85 Corridor and the center opened in 1992.  The center has been expanded and in February 2003, a brand-new arena will be home to Gwinnett’s two new professional sporting teams- The Georgia Force Arena Football Team and the Gwinnett Gladiators, Atlanta’s new minor league hockey team.  Involvement from residents and developers will help drive the plan for this area to be the heart of Gwinnett.  http://www.gwinnettchamber.org/economic/vision.asp

 

HAMPTON ROADS, VA-Symantec, one of the world’s leading software designer, will house its PC Anywhere and Internet Security division in Newport News at a new $22 million facility, hiring at least 300 software designers.

The Virginia Advanced Shipyard building and Carrier Integration Center (VADCIC) a world-class research facility, will house Newport News Northrop Grumman and other defense contractors and researchers from several Virginia universities to conduct naval research and development.  The first project undertaken by the 500-700 scientist, engineers and technicians in the new $59 million facility will be to design the next generation nuclear aircraft carrier for the US Navy.  http://www.lukevision.com/Norfolk/cover.htm

A team of six universities has been awarded a contract worth as much as $379 million to work with NASA’s Langley Research Center and create a new, world-class aerospace research institute.  The National Institute of Aerospace will be an independent, non-profit entity located near   Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA.  The institute will fund research, outreach activities and educational programs on the team’s home campuses, as well as at the Hampton site.  One of the primary goals of the new institute is to stimulate the commercialization of intellectual property and facilitate the growth of new business opportunities.  http://www.pilotonline.com/business/bz0927nia.html

RALEIGH, NC-The council for Entrepreneurial Development (CED) is a private, non-profit organization formed in 1984 to stimulate the creation and growth of high-impact companies in the Research Triangle Region.  CED has recently raised over $4 million for a five-year strategic initiative to support area entrepreneurialship.  http://www.lukevision.com/raleigh/cover.htm
