September 2003

THE COMING JOB BOOM-On Monday August 25, 2003, I read an article on “The Coming Job Boom” with this statement…. “Forget those grim unemployment numbers.  Demographic forces are about to put a squeeze on the labor supply that will make it feel like 1999 all over again.”  This article is attached.

Then in the August 2003 Area Development Magazine, I read, “Working Hard to Find Workers”. Roger Herman of Greensboro, North Carolina is quoted in the magazine article, “The labor shortage is real.  In fact, it is a lot more serious than most executives realize” and “There is a lot of drum beating that says the long-term impact of the labor shortage will send US manufacturing overseas.  I don’t agree with that at all.  As a matter of fact, I see manufacturing growing in the United States in the coming years.  Foreign companies are actually opening up plants in the US.  If we can train workers, the future will be bright.”  Herman has written a book “Impending Crisis: Too Many Jobs, Too Few People.”

Our Vision communities are all working on strategies in the six foundations to prepare for this job boom.  Note the 10 fastest growing occupations in the “Coming Jobs Boom” article.

This will encourage us that better times are ahead for those communities that are prepared for the changing future.

PRODUCTIVITY IMPROVEMENT-Attached is a July 28, 2003 Business Week article about General Mills’ aim to increase productivity 15% per year.  They studied processes outside their industry like: US Marshall’s Service SWAT team, a NASCAR pit crew and Air Force mechanics repairing Stealth bombers.

Examples of productivity increases include time to change a production line between products reduced from 4.5 hours to 12 minutes.  It is clear that productivity increases are a requirement to continue to be competitive.

Increases in productivity are at the heart of realizing most of our Vision community’s Key Benchmarks, Vision and Strategies.  Think of the potential of your community, as it becomes known as a place where most private and public organizations are attaining dramatic annual productivity increases.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT-A consulting firm in Saginaw, Michigan, Molitor International, has a long history of introducing positive change in organizations.  Their clients have included Dow Corning, Cox Cable, and General Motors.  When Saginaw County Vision 2020 wanted to develop a program to train 1,000 leaders, they asked Molitor to develop a three-day training program.

The program has been very successful as described in a recent five-day series of Saginaw News article.  The articles began on July 20 and are attached.

The Vision produced agreement on the Key Benchmarks, Vision and Strategies.  The 1,000 Leaders program is producing new leaders to work with existing organizations to implement the strategies.

Molitor International will facilitate a session on Community Leadership Development at our Process Managers Meeting on October 2-4, 2003 in Saginaw.

Brian Molitor has written a book entitled, “The Power of Agreement”, available at http://www.powerofagreement.com/poa.html

PAULDING, GA-Planning for Paulding is a Vision driven Strategic Plan for Paulding County, Georgia.  Paulding is part of the Atlanta MSA and was the 7th fastest growing county in the United State during the 90’s. The process began in August 2003.

SAGINAW, MI-Our Vision Process Managers will meet in Saginaw for their 2nd for the Second Annual Process Managers Meeting on October 2-4, 2003.  They will share ideas, successes and best practices.
