SAGINAW, MI-The Dow Foundation approved a grant of $100,000 in support of the Saginaw County Vision 2020 “One Thousand Leaders Initiative”.  Learn more from the June 2002 newsletter of the Saginaw County Vision 2020 web site at http://www.saginawcountyvision2020.org/

MOBILE, AL-Mobile has two new building complexes committed for downtown with a total cost of $252 million.  One project includes construction of a 35-story office tower and renovating an historic hotel for $160 million.  The other is a 204,000 square foot federal Courthouse Complex costing $92 million.
            Mobile Mayor, Mike Dow, has formed a “Smart Growth” Committee to increase downtown redevelopment and halt sprawl at Mobile’s western suburban edge.  The committee is considering a wide range of issues that can make Mobile more attractive for new home construction. Mobile Today-7/8/02

UNION COUNTY, NC-Vision 2020 has begun an e-mail newsletter as they begin the 3rd year of implementation.  The first issue focused on an alliance for affordable housing and enhancing telecommunication. 

HARRISBURG, PA-The first Phase of proposed Harrisburg Polytechnic Institute will be the Harrisburg Polytechnic Preparatory School.  The prep school will open in the fall of 2003 with 125 freshmen and then add a like amount of freshmen each year.  The Harrisburg School District has signed a contract to allow the school to open.  A school district official said, “This memo signals a decision on the part of the community to serve students in a way that will change their lives”.  Patriot News - 7/10/2002

CURACAO, NETHERLANDS ANTILLES-Vishon Korsóu has begun an e-mail newsletter.  The June issue focused on fortifying the relationship with the island government, alliance and planning for the 3rd Annual Implementation Celebration on August 15, 2002.            http://www.vishonkorsou.org/

CHARLOTTE, NC-The Wachovia Corporation has announced that employees may use four hours of paid time each month to volunteer in community service, education and parental involvement in education.  Wachovia has a workforce of 82,000 associates.  Charlotte Business-Journal-6/25/2002

MEMPHIS, TN-The volume of air cargo at Memphis International Airport is up almost 45% this year.  It is likely that Memphis will be ranked as the world’s busiest air cargo airport for the 11th year in a row in 2002. Memphis Business-Journal 6/25/2002

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, NC-On July 11, 2002, REALIZE RUTHERFORD had a record attendance at the Community Meeting for their size community with 402 in attendance.  On July 29, 26, and August 2 & 9, the Vision Task Force completed the draft Strategic Plan.  From August 26 –October 28, the draft will be presented to many organizations requesting input on the draft.

YAKIMA, WA-On August 19-21, 2002, “FOR A BETTER TOMORROW” will begin the creation of the first seven Strategic Alliances.

SCHUYLKILL, PA-Work is beginning on a new Comprehensive Plan for Schuylkill County.  The Schuylkill County Conservatory said, “The idea of having a great deal of public input is a good one.  However, you should be reminded of the fact the Schuylkill County’s VISION already did this and the resulting VISION document’s Infrastructure Priority Strategy already gives an excellent outline." WILKES COUTNY, NC-At the July 11, 2002 Wilkes Vision 2020 3rd Annual Implementation Community Meeting, the following activities were reported:

§        Wilkes County, Wilkesboro, and North Wilkesboro adopted an investment policy to help attract jobs

§        The elected official alliance continues to meet quarterly to improve communication among the different government entities.

§        Wilkes County adopted a growth management plan.

§        The Recreation, Arts & Cultural Development Alliance reported:

Recreation

o       Created database of Wilkes County recreational facilitates and activities.

o       List local recreation activities monthly in a newspaper.

o       Identifies the availability of recreational activities in Wilkes by age group.

Art and Cultural Activities

o       Identified number of people involved on an annual basis in arts, cultural and entrainment events in Wilkes County.

o       Identified different venues throughout county where cultural events are not easily accessible.

o       Creating an annual calendar of events for every arts & cultural event throughout the county.

Shopping, Restaurants, Entertainment and Mapping

o       Created database of all shopping, restaurant and entertainment area in Wilkes County.

o       Through mapping, determine areas of shopping, restaurant and entertainment needs throughout populated areas of Wilkes.

o       Will continue to use mapping to encourage development of shopping, restaurants and entertainment areas of Wilkes County.

§         An Education Alliance has focused on increasing the grade 9-12 graduate rate by 3% each year.  The Alliance formed three teams to involve the student, faith community and business community.

§         The Literacy Alliance has seen dramatic increases in the number of students (up 50%) and number of hours the student is in the classroom (up 200%)   http://www.wilkesnc.org/vision/
