LAKELAND, FL-Lakeland Regional Medical Center received the Metro Lakeland Vision’s “Spirit of Vision” award on May 12, 2003.  The award honors the hospital for creating action plans to work on strategies adopted by the hospital as a Vision Partner.  The hospital adopted thirteen strategies and provides a progress report to the Vision office on each strategy every year.

Many of the programs that Lakeland Regional implements not only boost a Lakeland Vision strategy, but also have been incorporated into the hospital’s own strategic plan.  In the fiscal year 2002, the hospital reported these and other activities on the thirteen strategies:

  • Employees mentored more than 40 pupils at Winston Elementary School.  They spent 50 minutes a week with a child of higher-than-average risk of difficulty in school.

  • Earlier, hospital employees worked with Winston Elementary teachers who made a video for their pupils of how math is used daily at the hospital.

  • Sponsored a support group for pregnant teens.

  • Provided about 110,000 hours of continuing education and training to its hospital employees and managers.

  • Developed a CD of the state’s core curriculum for basic health sciences education.  The CD is aimed at high school and technical school students.

  • The hospital pledged to spend $45 million annually for 3 years on buildings, technology, equipment, and infrastructure.
