LAKELAND,
FL-Lakeland
Regional Medical Center received the Metro Lakeland Vision’s “Spirit of
Vision” award on May 12, 2003. The award honors the hospital for
creating action plans to work on strategies adopted by the hospital as a
Vision Partner. The hospital adopted thirteen strategies and provides a
progress report to the Vision office on each strategy every year.
Many of the programs that Lakeland Regional implements not only boost a
Lakeland Vision strategy, but also have been incorporated into the
hospital’s own strategic plan. In the fiscal year 2002, the hospital
reported these and other activities on the thirteen strategies:

DALTON,
GA-The
Dalton, GA Region, including Whitfield and Murray counties, has been
designated a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). The MSA has a
population of 125,581 and ranks 10th in Georgia. Attaining
MSA status was one of the strategies of “Target Tomorrow” and a reason
to celebrate.

SPOKANE,
WA-Former
Austin Mayor, Kirk Watson, spoke to a Spokane business forum on June 12,
2003 at a celebration of local technology companies. Watson described a
new world order that favors quality over size and creativity over
material assets. He described the Austin economic revival during the
past decade and said the Spokane region has all the assets needed to
enjoy similar success.

ST. JOHNS
COUNTY, FL-St.
Johns County will borrow $30 million to take advantage of low interest
rates and begin local high priority transportation projects. The county
will issue Transportation Improvement Revenue Bonds that will be
guaranteed by the local-option gasoline tax.

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, NC-The
Duke Endowment awarded grants of more than $116 million to organizations
and agencies in North Carolina and South Carolina in 2002. The largest
beneficiary in Rutherford County was Rutherford Hospital, which received
a total of $379,731 in four grants.

2002, the Memphis International Airport was the world’s largest cargo
airport. This is the 12th year that MIA has been #1. The
airport recorded 3.39 million metric tons of cargo for 2002, up 28.8%
from 2001.

GA-The
Savannah River Site is being considered as a site for a facility worth
up to $4 billion that would produce triggers to detonate nuclear
weapons. SRS is contending for the facility with nuclear installations
in Amarillo, TX; Carlsbad and Los Alamos, NM; and the Nevada Test Site.

COUNTY, NC-Union
County broke ground July 2003 on a new $15.9 million Justice Center in
downtown Monroe.

JACKSONVILLE, FL-The
Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the Annual Leadership Trip
on October 22-24, 2003 to Dallas, TX. The city’s newly elected Mayor,
John Peyton and City Council President, Lad Daniels will be on the
trip.
The
Jacksonville Super Bowl Host Committee and representatives of three
cruise ship lines signed agreements on June 25, 2003 providing five
ships that will act as floating hotels and entertainment venues during
Super Bowl XXXIX in February 2005.

ATLANTA,
GA-Atlanta’s
air problems should be classified as “severe” rather than their current,
less harsh designation of “serious” according to a ruling on June 17,
2003 by the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. The change
in status could result in annual fines for about 60 Atlanta companies
contributing to pollution.
