10. Minot, ND:
Minot has been in the news in 2011 because of a record breaking flood.
However the Minot story is much more involved. The Minot Micropolitan
Statistical Area at $43,419 has the 18th highest Personal Per Capita
Income out of 576 US Micro MSA's. The unemployment rate in May 2011
was 2.8%. Minot State University has 3,866 students with 896 from
out-of-state or 21.7% of enrollment. June 14, 2011 Minot city voters
extended a 1-cent sales tax for infrastructure by a nearly 70 %
positive vote. This is an extension of a long term local tax for
additional water supply from a water basin 60 miles south. The latest
income and job growth results from oil exploration and production from
the Bakken formation using new hydraulic fracturing technology. The US
could use ND as an example of how to increase job growth and reduce
our dependence on imported energy. Minot Air Force base had 5,015 jobs
in 2009 and is growing.
